It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you hear that I recommend that parents get started teaching kids to cook when they’re only about 2 years old! How do you get started teaching kids to cook that young? What if you don’t even feel confident in your own cooking, how will you teach someone else?

If you’re wondering how to get started teaching your kids to cook my best advice is to jump right in and just start somewhere! It doesn’t have to be perfect, but once you’ve started, you’re more likely to keep going and get where you want to go!

Here’s Colleen’s story of how she jumped right in to teach her kids to cook. She has 3 kids ages 8, 6, and 2 and they’ve used Kids Cook Real Food to give them confidence in the kitchen!

Why Should You Use Kids Cook Real Food?

Colleen had been doing some cooking with her kids. Her 8-year-old who could read used some boxed mixes, but Colleen wanted more direction and structure to teach the kids skills and practice them routinely.

When she saw we start teaching knife skills at the beginner level she was impressed! Using real tools to learn real skills is a huge confidence boost for kids!

Colleen enjoyed the flexibility of being able to skip around the course a bit or repeat certain lessons until her kids were ready to move on with confidence. They found the beginner level to be a great foundation before moving on to the baking challenge and other skills.

Go Ahead: Get Started Teaching Your Kids to Cook!

Colleen’s advice to other parents looking to get started teaching their kids to cook is to put it on the calendar and just pick a time to jump right in!

If you’re nervous, start with the all kid lessons. They’re helpful, knowledge-based, and don’t make you feel like you need to do a whole project.

Colleen’s kids love to use the fun phrases we teach in Kids Cook Real Food like “let flour fall like snow.”

While Colleen considers herself a competent cook already, she realized that she had been forgetting some basic kitchen skills that were never formally taught to her as a child or young adult.

The quality of our baked goods has improved because I’m not scooping the flour wrong. -Colleen referencing our technique “let the flour fall like snow”

Her kids are now her veggie choppers so they have vegetables in the fridge ready for the whole week! The 8-year-old is very serious about his responsibilities when he uses his 6-inch chef’s knife!
