The Chore System That’s Lasted a Decade in a Family of Six

A simple, visual system that helps kids follow through without constant nagging.

I’m Katie Kimball—Mrs. Kimball to the kids.

I’m a mom of four, a former classroom teacher, and the founder of Raising Healthy Families. For over 10 years, I’ve been teaching kids to cook and helping families build real-life skills at home.

When my kids were little, I was desperate for a system to get the house clean without MOM doing everything (and without weekly battles).

I didn’t want anything complicated or reward-based.

I just wanted my kids to learn that being part of a family = making a contribution.

So I built a system that’s simple enough to stick with, but structured enough to work.

It’s lasted over a decade in our home of six! It’s not fancy, but it works.

Now I’m sharing it with you and giving you the tools to make it your own!

Here’s what you’ll get to make chores less chaotic and more consistent:

Let’s be clear about what this is not…

  • It’s NOT a reward chart or payment tracker. You get to decide how (or if) your family handles allowance or paid gigs. This system works whether you pay per chore, use a family economy, or just say, “This is part of living here.”
  • It’s NOT rigid and inflexible. Both kids and parents get choices built in—what chores they do and when they do them.
  • It’s NOT a one-size-fits-all approach. You can edit, customize, and adapt it to fit your home, your season, your kids’ ages, and your sanity.

This is a low-pressure structure that’s simple enough to keep using for years (ask me how I know…) and flexible enough to grow with your family.

Why this System Works When Others Don’t

  • Not reward-based—just natural expectations and follow-through
  • Easy to adapt for any age, stage, or number of kids
  • Kids get to choose some of their chores = fewer power struggles
  • Includes a natural consequence that doesn’t feel like punishment
  • Built-in flexibility so you can actually keep it going

This could be the moment chores start feeling manageable.
