Lifestyle and figuring out the root cause work better than medication for many people. - Dr. Isabella Wentz

It turns out that (surprise surprise!) our bodies are ALL connected.

The thyroid and the adrenals have some interesting relationships, and in today’s show “The Thyroid Pharmacist” Dr. Izabella Wentz sits down with me to talk about fatigue, why parents shouldn’t expect to be tired all the time, and what we can do to optimize energy when we can’t get rid of all the stressful things in life.

You’ll learn:

  • Why so many women have thyroid, adrenal, and autoimmune issues
  • What is normal about our bodies vs what is common
  • What safety signals mean and how they’re so important to our body’s sense of health and healing
  • How the time of day may dictate what types of food your body needs
  • Dr. Izabella’s very favorite supplement for fatigue
  • The vitamins and minerals that stress burns the most and how to supplement that back in so you feel better

I keep learning about adrenal fatigue and trying to take steps to alleviate my own. In fact, the day we filmed this interview, I took Dr. Izabella’s advice immediately and did her “first step” that very night!

She’s got a brand new book publishing TODAY about adrenal health and a transformative protocol she developed that’s helped thousands of people. Grab your copy today!

Fatigue and Your Adrenals

  • 0:44: Today I’m talking to Dr. Izabella Wentz about adrenal fatigue and how it affects parents.
  • 2:18: Dr. Wentz’s latest book about adrenal function was just released this week! We’re going to talk about her adrenal health protocol today.
  • 2:48: Dr. Wentz is known as the “Thyroid Pharmacist,” she tells us the story behind that nickname.
  • 5:50: Most conventional doctors don’t see thyroid conditions as reversible. Medications work well for some people, but others still struggle with significant symptoms and doctors have nowhere else to point them.
  • 7:50: Fatigue is a primary symptom in both adrenal fatigue and thyroid issues. Many people with thyroid dysfunction also have adrenal fatigue.

What Is Adrenal Fatigue?

  • 10:08: The adrenals are two glands that sit on our kidneys and produce stress hormones. Adrenal dysfunction can be over or underactive adrenals. Dr. Wentz explains how a few different types of adrenal dysfunction would look.
  • 12:36: A stressful event in your life can trigger a physical stress response that leads to adrenal burnout and fatigue.
  • 13:48: What’s the difference between “normal fatigue” and fatigue that’s cause for concern? Just because something is common doesn’t mean it should be that way.
  • 15:50: Women are more often affected by adrenal fatigue. Dr. Wentz gives her theory as to why that is.

How to Support Your Adrenals

  • 17:22: Dr. Wentz is from Poland and she tells a story about realizing that “how are you?” doesn’t mean the same thing in America as it does in Europe. Women who have friends or go to therapy and actually get their emotions out tend to be healthier. Here are some tips for cultivating friendship as an adult.

If you hold all your stress in, it will become inflammatory for you. -Dr. Izabella Wentz

  • 19:47: When we feel like we’re in survival mode it’s hard to find time to rest and heal. Dr. Wentz’s approach is to look for little doses of joy and safety throughout your day.
  • 22:30: Nutritionally, make sure you’re eating protein and fat every few hours throughout the day, supplement B vitamins, vitamin C, and magnesium because stress burns through those vitamins quickly.

For some people, a magnesium supplement is the difference between "I'm overwhelmed" and "I'm busy but capable." -Dr. Izabella Wentz

  • 25:49: Dr. Wentz looks at food through the lens of whether it’s sending your body safety or stress signals. Not eating enough, eating junk food, not enough fat and protein and inadequate nutrition can all send stress signals to your body. Here’s the other interview I mentioned.
  • 27:27: If you have trouble with morning fatigue this could signal low cortisol, low blood sugar and/or low blood pressure. Dr. Wentz has an adrenal kickstart drink you can try in the morning to get your day going.

  • 29:16: Let’s talk supplements. Dr. Wentz’s top recommended supplement is an adaptogenic herb like ashwagandha. Here are a few Earthley supplements containing ashwagandha: cocoa calm, anxiety relief, natural balance, and thyroid support
  • 31:12: Frequent night wakings, especially between 2-3am could signal blood sugar imbalance.
  • 34:07: Dr. Wentz teaches 4 Rs: replenish, reenergize, revitalize, and rebuild resilience. We’re going to finish today by talking about the resilience piece. Dr. Wentz has several examples of ways to grow resilience in our daily lives.

We live in the modern world and can’t get rid of every stressful thing in our lives, so we have to make ourselves more resilient to stress. -Dr. Izabella Wentz

  • 38:30: You can get Dr. Wentz’s ABCs of Adrenals guide here.
  • 39:47: We end with one practical step you can take today, or at least this week to improve your adrenal function. Here’s the magnesium lotion I mentioned.
