Homemade Whole Wheat Roll Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (any kind) (we weight our flour and it is 540 grams)
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (we used room temp but it could have risen more if I used 100F water)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 Tbs. yeast
  • 2 tsp. salt

Directions

  1. Put all ingredients in a stand mixer and begin mixing.
  2. Add flour a little at a time until the dough stops sticking to the sides.
  3. Let the mixer knead the dough until it stretches rather than breaks. See the video for visual!
  4. Let dough rise for about an hour and a half until it’s doubled in size.
  5. With floured hands, make balls of dough the size of tangerines. (You’ll get 20-14 rolls)
  6. Place onto an ungreased baking stone or lightly greased cookie sheet and allow to rise 45 minutes.
  7. Bake in a preheated 375F oven for 15-20 minutes. Makes about 2 dozen rolls or 12-18 buns.

No matter what life throws at our kids, we need them to be resilient.
