One of our member families had an experience where teaching life skills (like cooking!) kept their family afloat during a rough season.
Here’s Sara to explain how Kids Cook Real Food™ has impacted their family!
My ultimate goal when we joined Kids Cook Real Food™ was to work on life skills.
As a mom, you want to make sure that your kids are functioning adults when they leave your house.
We’re your typical busy family. We homeschool, we’re in sports, we are in piano and other kid activities; just trying to fit it all in the schedule.
Even though I want my kids to learn to cook, I’m like most moms, sometimes it’s hard to include kids in the kitchen when I’m trying to hurry it up and get dinner on the table at a certain time.
Then we tried Kids Cook Real Food™.

Short-Term Wins From Teaching Life Skills
The biggest short-term benefits we’ve seen from teaching our kids to cook was when I was recently pregnant.
I have hyperemesis gravidarum which is basically debilitating sickness throughout the pregnancy. I had to go to the hospital to get IV fluids: this is not normal morning sickness.
As soon as I take a pregnancy test, and start throwing up, I’m done. Mama is in bed for the next nine months.
Then I developed another pregnancy complication called SPD, which causes excruciating pain in your pelvis when you try to walk. I eventually had to go to physical therapy, wear a brace and use a cane just to walk from my bed to the bathroom!

Do you forget everything immediately? (My hand is raised …)
That’s why we created the one-page summaries of each podcast episode, in a simple Google Doc so there’s nothing to download.
Print them off and make yourself an actual handbook or just view online and search for what you want!
The weekend that I took my pregnancy test, my husband actually tore his bicep and needed to have surgery to reattach that.
Through it all we still homeschool, we still have piano lessons, we still are in sports. It was chaos. Oh, and we still have to eat, clean the bathrooms and wash laundry.
People would ask me, “How are you making it?”
Kids Cook Real Food™ Review: Life Skills Save the Day!
Honestly, the key to surviving this rough season was how I’ve been training my kids. My kids can do laundry and cook. We started very early teaching the kids to do chores.
If it were not for my kids, we would not have been able to function. I was not cooking. My husband couldn’t.

Tips for Meal Planning in Survival Mode
We made a list of things the kids could eat, and the items we would be sure to keep in the pantry. (Thank the Lord for grocery delivery and grocery pick up!)
For breakfast, they could do oatmeal. My youngest (aged 8) doesn’t really like oatmeal so he would have eggs and egg sandwiches or make muffins.
“Mooooom, I’m hungry!!”
How many times do your kids ask for snacks each day? Wouldn’t it be a relief if they were empowered to prepare their own snacks, instead of coming to you and whining about how hungry they are?

For lunch, they would cut fruit and vegetables with dip, make sandwiches, or little appetizer platters.
For dinner, we did easy things like tacos, (because my kids could brown meat and make homemade taco seasoning from Beginner lesson 4!) and spaghetti.
Note from Katie: I have to applaud the fact that they were cutting up fruits and vegetables! They’re getting their food groups covered!
We did have our fair share of takeout, but we wanted to eat healthier when we could.
We would assign kids jobs: one would be in charge of salads each day, and another cutting up fruit.

Being Prepared by Teaching Your Kids Life Skills
We did have friends who started a meal train, we’re so thankful for them the month of meals that people did for us, but not everyone has that. So you really need to be prepared.
We talked to our kids about our family culture and how this is what families have to do to help each other: we love each other well and we serve each other. That’s just part of being a family.
The biggest point in the story is we never know when a crisis will hit and when the kids will need to step up. What a joy and blessing to be ready!
Thanks so much for sharing your story with us Sara! I’m honored that Kids Cook Real Food™ could play a part in training your children to serve the family!
