This guest had me at, “All diets fail,” and the mineral pretty much every human being (at least in North America) is deficient in.
I know what you’re thinking, smart readers—you think it’s magnesium. But it’s not!
Put on your science geek caps for this interview, because biochemist and nutritionist Barton Scott will need your full attention to explain why traditional supplementation isn’t working, why FOOD isn’t even working (and can’t work) to heal what’s ailing us, and why each generation is going to get worse until we stop the problem.
We discuss:
- The best form of testing to improve health (and it doesn’t even hurt!)
- Why getting our minerals in balance improves so many aspects of health
- Why our minerals are OUT of balance in the first place
- How supplementing often doesn’t help
- How much more toxic our world is than a few hundred years ago 🙁
- Where some meat aversions come from for picky eaters, and why smoothies have a dark side
It’s a packed interview, so get ready to learn about your basic building blocks, and why they can’t be ignored.

Mineral Deficiency: The Root Cause of Everything
- 0:50: Today we’re talking to biochemist and nutritionist Barton Scott.
- 2:00: Barton shares his story with us. He personally developed nutrient deficiencies and has a heart for moms who are giving so many nutrients away to their babies.
We can’t afford for moms to have nutrient deficiencies, because babies will start off with nutrient deficiencies. -Barton Scott

- 7:38: If you’re iodine deficient your child will have a lower IQ. There’s no way around this!
- 10:21: We only have 60% of the nutrients that used to be in the soil 80 years ago. We really don’t stand a chance even if we’re eating a whole-food diet. Barton thinks almost everyone is deficient in something.
How to Test Mineral Levels
- 11:04: The testing Barton does uses your hair to test mineral levels. It’s more comprehensive than any other way to test minerals.
- 12:30: Barton gives us more details on what they test and what it means.
- 13:56: What about testing minerals through the blood? Barton explains why this isn’t going to be as accurate. He mentions getting better sleep, here are some tips for improving sleep.
- 16:31: Let’s get into some of the common deficiencies. 96% of people are deficient in iodine. Manganese and magnesium are two other common ones.
Do you forget everything immediately? (My hand is raised …)
That’s why we created the one-page summaries of each podcast episode, in a simple Google Doc so there’s nothing to download.

Supplementing Minerals for Optimal Health
- 18:20: Why does standard supplementation not work well? Many supplements contain particle sizes that are too big for optimal absorption.
- 22:01: Is there anything we can do with food? Soil quality is huge for the nutrition of the food.

- 24:55: I’ve heard predictions that by 2050 half of children will be born with autism. When nutrient-deficient mothers are growing nutrient-deficient babies, these are the consequences. Autism has been linked with a few nutrient deficiencies and heavy metal toxicity in either the mother or the child. Here’s another interview I did about functional medicine for children with autism.
Most Common Mineral Deficiency
- 26:05: Let’s talk more about iodine. I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone talking about how much we need iodine and that we’re all deficient. Barton has a shocking statistic about how much iodine they consume in Japan vs the US. Here’s my favorite non-iodized salt.
We desperately need iodine – and all the minerals, but test regularly, don’t guess. -Barton Scott
Wish you didn’t have to feel nervous when your kids ask to use knives?
- 30:45: Minerals aren’t the only thing we absorb from our food, but they actually affect our digestion of vitamins and other nutrients!
- 31:40: I work with lots of picky eaters. There’s a large group of kids who refuse to eat meat. Zinc deficiency can actually make people have a hard time digesting protein.
- 33:58: Chewing your food really well helps your body produce the enzymes needed to digest it. You can even chew your smoothies to stimulate your digestive system!
- 35:50: What’s the message of hope here? You can be in control of your health. You can make changes to live more healthily.
