girls pouring water learning to cook

If you’ve been on the fence with Kids Cook Real Food, but aren’t convinced yet, you need to read Lori’s stories below about her two girls building connection, confidence, and creativity as they took our cooking course!

Lori’s girls have awed us all with their sharp knife skills, perfect pouring, and share some humor as well, like the time they pretended the flour they were measuring was snow and they ate it!

I love how you can see the growth in Lori’s daughters as she recounts stories of them learning to cook together!

Building Connection Cooking as a Family

Lori had a reckoning moment when she realized that her family had fallen into eating out – A LOT. It wasn’t the life (or skills) she wanted to build for her two girls.

She and her husband determined to avoid eating out for a full 30 days straight, and when the tantrums from the girls ensued, she decided to try involving them in the process.

Using the videos and skills we teach in Kids Cook Real Food, my online A to Z kids cooking program where kids cook together with you in the kitchen and learn skills for life, Lori and her daughters managed to complete the 30-day goal!

Not only that, but it only took ONE experience to get them on board.

On the very first day of the no-eating-out commitment, everyone shared the work to make sushi and miso soup, the girls got super motivated to help (and competitive about who did what). Lori shared:

Everybody ate everything, said it was better than eating out (totally shocked), and got totally on board with the 30 day commitment.

Disclaimer: Nope, no sushi in our course. We teach SKILLS, not recipes, so you can make whatever fits your family!

What if your kids could make a whole meal by themselves?

It’s totally possible for even the youngest children, once they learn the skills in the Kids Cook Real Food eCourse! Grab Your FREE Download: Kid-Friendly Recipes right here!

Unleashing Confidence by Teaching Kids to Cook

Lori’s 8-year-old was particularly grumpy about doing cooking classes and often complained during cooking time.

Then one day she suddenly requested to make a homemade soup on her own! She thrives with creative freedom, so Lori gave brief guidance and watched as her daughter made bone broth, harvested veggies in the garden, made her soup, and served the family from the trampoline. It was so good, everyone had thirds!

This is the kind of creativity that comes out when kids get confident cooking!

Lori’s 5-year-old cracked the eggs, shredded the cheese, and whipped the eggs for this frittata.

She always claimed she hated frittata, but since mom always says “the chef always takes the first bite” she has tried it and she likes it!

I see it again and again, kids who participate in cooking the food gain confidence to try new foods.

Getting Creative with Kids in the Kitchen

During Lesson 7 instead of just making salads, Lori’s girls had a contest to see who could get the most colors and the most different plants from the garden and edible weeds outside.

They had a blast! They even sprinkled their own “pleasant” spice sprinkles (from Lesson 4) onto their salads and took a few bites.

What did they put on their salads?

A better question is what did they NOT put into their salads. 3 kinds of kale, 2 kinds of broccoli, asparagus, 5 kinds of lettuce, henbit, chickweed, dandelion, 2 kinds of chive, 2 kinds of fennel, 4 kinds of mint, parsley, cilantro, rose leaves, lemon balm, lemongrass, and more!

Kids don’t need plastic knives. They need real skills.

Kids Cook Real Food Course is Totally Worth It!

Both of Lori’s girls said their favorite part of doing Kids Cook Real Food was learning to use knives. It’s such a huge confidence booster when kids know they’re capable of using adult tools.

Even though Lori’s 8 yr old has been doing things in the kitchen before Kids Cook Real Food, she still learns something every lesson.

Lori has been learning right along with her girls. Since we teach skills rather than recipes, many parents say they learn new tips, even from the beginner classes!

The girls use the memory phrases outside of class as well. Lori shares:

I was cooking and then started telling a story, and I kept my knife in my hands as I was talking, animatedly waving it around with enthusiasm on accident. My youngest yells: MOM! FOOD MOVES, KNIFE DOWN!!!
